Wage cuts eyed for railway workers as loan talks loom
New York August 10 reported plan for a second wage reduction of 56 percent or more for millions of union railway employees. A $300 million loan from the Reconstruction Finance Corporation to fund equipment and repairs is debated as eastern and western railroad executives meet. The move echoes February’s 10 percent cut tied to declining revenues and interest charges. Critics call the loan uneconomic, arguing purchases and repairs may not be needed for years.
