Elyria boosts night safety with 400 mercury vapor street lights and more police, firemen, and new equipment. Roads widen through TOPICS funds, water works expand to 32 million gallons daily, sewers pave 32 streets, and urban renewal advances. Lorain, Oberlin, Vermilion, Amherst, Sheffield Lake, Avon Lake, North Ridgeville report new police, parks, pools, sewers, roads, and a shift toward modernization.

Prosecutor says judge died as van halted in gun battle

Witnesses describe the 1965 San Rafael standoff in which Judge Harold J. Haley was killed when a roadblock stopped the fleeing gunmen. The critically wounded Gary Thomas gave a private account through his wife, recalling seizing a gun and firing at the assailants as hostages were released.

Four capture suspects killed in Marin County courthouse shootout

Witnesses recount a dramatic escape from the Marin County Civic Center in which judge Haley was fatally shot during a van ambush. Four kidnapers died in the gunfight as about 100 officers pursued the fleeing vehicle. Czechs seize U S students at border during study trip

Czechoslovak border guards detained 20 American high school students their guide and three West Germans after crossing into Czechoslovakia near Furth im Wald. Police said the youths aged 14 to 18 climbed a wire fence thinking it on the West German side. A consular official hoped for release by today as Pilsen police questioned the group.

Weather and release hopes amid Munich consulate statements

Warm weather with highs around 86 and clear to partly cloudy skies continues. A U S Consulate spokesman in Munich hopes the seven girls, 13 boys, and tour leader Bryce Jackson of Denver will be released today as is normal in such cases, a West German spokesman said.
