State Chamber Warns of Homestead Tax Break Impact

A survey by the State Chamber of Commerce finds that with homestead exemptions about 400 cities could not hire night watchmen or maintain sewers and streets. About 261,502,500 in taxable property would be removed from rolls, bankrupting many municipalities and counties. The plan would exempt homesteads up to 1500 valuation and cost 15834000 annually in pensions for 87724 qualifying persons, funded by the state. The state budget is already 26000000 in the red and debt stands at 2000000, sparking conservative alarm.
