Apollo 15 splashes down safely despite one failing parachute
Apollo 15 astronauts David Scott James Irwin and Alfred Worden return to the USS Okinawa after a 12 day lunar mission. A single parachute collapse caused a faster impact and a water landing but the crew is safe and sound. The Endeavour hit the ocean at 21.8 mph instead of 19 mph yet remained upright. Recovery helicopters lifted the astronauts to the carrier deck as a Navy Band played. Scientists at Houston will begin studying 171 pounds of moon rock and core samples tomorrow.

Camping time for 50 orphans in Operation Open Heart
More than 50 orphaned boys and girls from Lorain and Summit Counties will spend three days with "parents" as part of Operation Open Heart. Boys from Green Acres Oberlin and Summit County Children's Home Akron will be paired with county law enforcement officers and businessmen, while girls from Green Acres and Elyria Mothers YWCA will spend time with designated "mothers" at Camp Clare-Mar. The program, started 15 years ago, includes a police car ride to Mill Hollow Park, planned fireworks, swimming, boating, and a donor-supported camp setup with trailers, with Cleveland Cavaliers players possibly visiting. A hoped-for permanent campsite is sought.
