Alfalfa-Timothy Hay System Proves Valuable in Drought

M A Bachtell of the Ohio Experiment Station reports at Trumbull County Farm that semi permanent alfalfa timothy meadows can keep half or more of tillable land in hay, yielding 4½ tons per acre in normal years. Even during the 1934 drought, established meadows produced over 1½ tons, with multiple cuts depending on rainfall. Such meadows reduce labor, raise feed production, cut purchased protein, and stabilize hay supply when clover fails. Holstein cows fed 30 pounds of hay daily plus corn silage and reduced high protein grain nearly matched milk output and improved feed cost returns compared with traditional systems. Limestone applications, about 5 tons per acre to raise soil pH, were key on acidic soils.

An experiment at the Southeastern Experiment Farm shows lime dramatically boosts clover and grass cover, outperforming manure and phosphates. Recommendations: apply 2 tons per acre lime, followed by 490 to 500 pounds of 20 percent superphosphate per 4 years.
