Fire devastates Thistle Building in Lorain

A Sunday early morning blaze at the Thistle Building on 700 Broadway in Lorain forced firefighters to fight from the outside. Two residents were reported trapped on the second floor and Red Cross aid helped about six residents while others escaped. One resident described carrying his fiancée through intense heat to safety as firefighters deployed a ladder to reach trapped occupants.

Council to rezone parcels for Elyria Schools stadium project

Elyria City Council will vote to rezone about 30 school parcels near the existing stadium into a single business general district. The measure also includes vacating a segment of State Street to transfer it to the district for the multimillion dollar athletic complex.

Manufacturer cites beam corrosion in Ohio State Fair ride collapse

Dutch maker KMG says excessive corrosion inside the Fire Ball gondola support beam caused a catastrophic failure during operation at the Ohio State Fair killing 18-year-old Tyler Jarrell and injuring seven others. The ride was 18 years old. Jarrell had just enlisted in the Marine Corps and was about to start his senior year.
