They promised huge payoffs 400 to 1 600 to 1 and discounted bets. Siegler held 20 percent of Letco Toyota in Elyria and needed runners who would earn ten percent daily.

Charles Brown, 14, grandson of Elyria resident Mrs. Alice Brown, won the sixth annual Lorain County Soap Box Derby after finishing last last year. He beat Matt Gard, 12, by six inches in a 34.50 second run. Charles earns a berth to the All American Derby in Akron on August 26 and a $500 U.S. Savings Bond plus awards from Chevrolet Nordson Corp and the Gard trophy. Second through fourth finishers receive savings bonds. Mickey Greenbank, Gary Latteman among them. Charles plans to pursue racing, possibly Indianapolis 500.
