Shipping season hits Great Lakes hard as steel slump widens
Lake Carriers' Association president says the shipping season sees the worst tonnage since the 1930s downturn. Iron ore, coal, and grain moved 38.4 million tons this season, down from 47 million last year, with June figures showing a dramatic drop in ore, and layoffs rising to 1,500 for Great Lakes sailors. Some sectors, like coal and grain, show gains, while Lorain and Lorain Port face sharp declines. Port authorities report overall improvement in Cleveland and increased foreign vessel traffic as optimism returns.
