Smoking ills grow as AMA study links cigarettes to heart disease
CHICAGO UPI AMA researchers report that cigarette smoking can cause irreversible heart damage and may be linked to conditions from indigestion to cancer. A $15 million, 14-year project sponsored by the AMA and funded by leading tobacco companies strengthens evidence that smoking contributes to chronic lung disease, heart conditions, and stroke. The 365-page report, started in 1964, includes over 750 abstracts and notes cancer-causing agents in nicotine. It emphasizes that smokers with heart trouble should not smoke and notes nicotine plus oxygen deprivation can harm the heart and raise clot risks.
