Car crash cuts power to Lorain and Amherst area

A crash on Tower Blvd near Leagitt Rd knocked out a 12,500 volt distribution line, cutting power for about 46 minutes to roughly 2,050 customers in Lorain and Amherst. Ohio Edison crews restored service by 12:22 a.m., with the southwest Lorain area bordered by Skyline Drive Cooper Foster Park Road Oxford Drive and Oberlin Avenue.

Man charged after trespassing at Ely water tower painting

A 25-year-old man, Victor R. Posey, was charged with trespassing and criminal damaging after painting letters on the Ely water tower at Route 57 and Furnace Street. He was ordered down at about 3 18 p.m. and jailed. Letters resembling "Johnny" were painted backward on the tower.

Death ruled as self-inflicted overdose of sleeping pills

Murray Stewart 53, a Channel 3 news anchor, was found dead in a Beachwood hotel. Deputy Coroner Charles S. Hirsch ruled the death a self-inflicted action due to sleeping-pill overdose. He suffered hypoglycemia, nervousness, and convulsions. survived by a wife and eight children.

Fire damages home on Peck Wadsworth Road

Wellington fire officials estimate $1000 in damage after a self cleaning oven ignited a fire at the Cartie Soward residence on Peck Wadsworth Road. Fire Chief William Weber reported flames damaged a cupboard and smoke affected the rest of the house.

Man charged with drugs in Elyria arrest

A Spruce Street man Kenneth W. Williams 22 was charged with possession of hallucinogens after his mother called for help. Police found a bag of white powder and a bottle with bills in an upstairs room at 237 Spruce Street. He was taken to city jail after the incident about 11 p.m.

Elyria parks department announced new pool hours starting Monday with daily public access from 1:08 p.m. to Labor Day. Adults only sessions run 7 to 8 p.m. at five parks. high school student sessions run 8:15 to 9:30 p.m. at North Park on Tue and Thu through Aug 26.

Death of 14-year-old Oberlin crash victim in Elyria hospital

Donald L. Walton, 14, of Oberlin, died at 5:35 p.m. at Elyria Memorial Hospital after a car bicycle collision near his home. The accident also killed Wilbur J. Ives, 52, of Oberlin. Walton, injured two weeks earlier, was northbound on a 10 speed bicycle near Route 10 when struck by Danny Hiscax, 29, of Oberlin. The bicycle had no lights and a car headlight was out. Deputies continue to investigate. Burial will be in Westwood Cemetery after services at Cowling Funeral Home in Oberlin.

Avon to Lorain Erie and Cuyahoga counties will redesignate major highways in a planned change. Area couple's cabin ruined in Colo flood

The Biz Thompson River canyon flood in Colorado swept away a summer cabin belonging to Mr and Mrs Patsy Vartorella nine miles south of Estes Park while another cabin on higher ground owned by Mr and Mrs Edward Hamers of Huron was spared. The Vartorellas learned their cabin was torn from its foundation with doors windows and the fireplace missing after returning from a month’s vacation. The Hamers were rescued unharmed by a helicopter team.

Elyria Man Charged After Foot Chase and Arrest

Elyria police arrested Larry L. Davis after a brief foot chase that began around 3 a.m. He faces two counts of resisting arrest and one count of disorderly conduct. The disorderly conduct and one resisting charge relate to harassing three young women near a Hollywood Drive home. Davis was found at his Augdon Drive residence several hours later on warrants from the earlier incident.

Auto injury suit filed in Lorain County court

Paul E. Thomas Jr. of 352 Vulcan St. filed a $200,000 negligence suit in Lorain County Common Pleas for injuries from a traffic crash on Rt. 57 at Bell Ave. The defendants are Edward D. Ward of 475 W. 10th St. and John Mayfield Jr. of 5619 Telegraph Rd. Amherst, with James Transfer Co. named as a defendant. The Ward car and the transfer company vehicle collided on Oct. 17, 1975.
