Storms sweep Midwest cause widespread outages and damage
Thunderstorms driven by up to 70 mph winds swept the Midwest from Iowa to the Lake Michigan area, cutting power to about 70,000 Chicago region customers. Downed trees and a roof loss were reported as a cold front brought heavy rain to eastern Kansas and scattered thundershowers lingered in Texas. Dallas neared 95 degrees after a 100-degree heat wave easing.
