Sandstone Legacy of Lorain County Quarries and History
Local sandstone played a key role for early Lorain County settlers with quarries at Brownhelm, Amherst and Elyria. Prominent sites include the Amherst South Amherst area and the Mussey quarry, with water transport from Clough Quarry and deep Buckeye quarry workings. The work, skilled and seasonal, shaped regional industry and lasting architectural landmarks, though stone's importance waned in modern times.
