President Roosevelt's housing bill faced a likely House defeat as leaders filed the measure for a vote. The anticipated outcome came amid a crowded postures session with adjournment looming, rule fights, and clashes over social security and commodity credits.
Estes A Kernche of the building inspection division says an early inspection of the courthouse dome is promised after a letter to county commissioners. Joda Kern indicates JG Odgers of Bellevue will conduct the inspection and submit a written report. Ohio department inspection was requested by Commissioner John E Davison amid reports the dome is dangerous.
Ohio weather forecasts show generally fair conditions with a cooler tonight and a cooler Friday. Low pressure extends from Ontario southward over the Lake Region and Ohio Valley, with a high centered over the Northern Rocky Mountains. Showers touch the low region and south to the Gulf, cooler in the Upper Lake Region, and warmer toward the Lawrence Valley and Upper Ohio Valley.
Four people sustained minor lacerations and abrasions after a two car collision on Cleveland Street at Bellfield Avenue. Dr I E Downes of 43 Herrick Avenue Wellington and Elmer Meecham of 122 Northrup Street were involved. Downes complained of a bruised chest while Meecham and passengers suffered cuts from broken glass. Clayton Franks and Vince Meecham also reported injuries. A second crash on Route 08 near Huntington damaged a car driven by Graham Stultz and a truck driven by Vaughn Finkle as Finkle turned into his driveway. Deputy sheriffs investigated both incidents.
Three inmates escaped Stark County jail when they knocked out an iron grate and breached a concrete wall. Suspects include Amet Harra 24 of Richwood Ohio serving a false pretenses sentence, William Lee Galzen Pe petty larceny, and John Edwara 27 of Canton charged with attempting a felony. State patrol aided by Sheriff Joseph Nist in the search, with a prior escape noted.
London August 3 the home office announced that baby gas masks would be available soon in attractive child sizes. Mothers are asked to let children handle the masks to become familiar with use. Three types are described a protection helmet for babies up to two years a padded hood with a large window and a pump bellows supplied by a bellows device a small respirator for two to four years and a smaller respirator for four to five years.
Charles Keith, 29, of South Prospect Street, was admitted to Elyria Memorial Hospital after dislocating his right hip from a fall Monday evening near the Brown Printing Co riverbank. He remained missing until 2:50 PM yesterday when his cries were heard by Lawrence Moore on Lodi Street. Keith told police he had been drinking and fell while with two men.
In Cleveland Ohio on August 3 reports state two boys aged nine and ten, Aniners Dr Matteo and Ernest Conklin Jr, drowned at unprotected swimming places. The tragedy was confirmed today as authorities investigated the incident.

About 450 American Stove Co workers in Lorain idle as a CIO strike begins at 9 am. Plant manager Sourbeck says two thirds left at start and rest sent home. shutdown indefinite. CIO says dispute over working conditions and wage inequalities. Sourbeck allegedly refused Tuesday meeting and denied earlier Saturday agreement. Previous strike six weeks ago involved jurisdictional dispute with CIO and WW.
Santa Monica reports Auge Ton Cornero and about 100 crew aboard the gambling boat Rex resisted a raid by county and state officers. He refused to permit officers to board, despite a court injunction, while claiming food and fuel to remain beyond the three mile limit if needed. The raid followed similar actions against the Texas, which suffered about 229000 dollars in damage as raiders tossed roulette tables overboard before guards halted the operation.
Three motions are scheduled for hearing in common pleas court regarding an injunction suit over alleged overcharges to care for the mentally disabled in state institutions and for court costs. The attorney general seeks to dissolve a temporary injunction. SPRINGFIELD II Aug 3 The Moody brothers Howard and Hunter set a new world endurance mark for light planes as they remained aloft 253 hours and 43 minutes in a 55 horsepower monoplane aiming to surpass the 653 hour record for heavy planes. They reported growing tired but planned to stay up to chase the longer duration.
Major Joseph Q Petro and Safety Service Director D Faxon met with four Lastside residents about Harmonfield on East River Street. A petition asked to bar Sunday games after August 28, but the Ohio State Girls Softball Tournament dates August 18 to 20 are at stake. The mayor and director sought permission to use the field on August 20, with unanimous support from the committee if J C Crisp, owner of the property, grants access.
Early today a 20 ton dump truck struck a bridge abutment at the foot of a three mile hill near New Lebanon New York killing two Akron Ohio men instantly. State police and local officials were investigating the fatal accident. The crash occurred about dawn as the truck descended the hill toward the bridge. Police said the cab and front end were crushed in the impact and the driver and passenger were pronounced dead at the scene. A roadside witness reported that the truck left the road moments before the crash. Further details were not immediately available.
U S Senator Robert A Taft of Ohio formally entered the 1940 presidential race by agreeing to be Ohio’s favorite son candidate. He consented to have Ohio’s 52 delegates pledged to him as first choice, citing Ohio Constitution rules and party support from the Hamilton County Republican Committee. Taft stressed his willingness to be designated as first choice and praised committee action while signaling a broader, cautious approach to the nominating process.
