Mrs. Matilda Waldman told a Cleveland court she was not sorry for killing Ida Rose Cooper claiming she was a witch. Police and psychology officials describe the case as a long delusion of spell casting and possession that led to a murder in a deli.
Chicago reports identify Mandeville W. Zenge as the mysterious stranger linked to the abduction and murder of Dr. Walter J. Bauer. Police arrange a dramatic confrontation to force a confession from Zenge, who claims love for Louise Shaeffer Bauer. Mrs. Bauer, in Cleveland for her husband's funeral, is asked to return.
Partly cloudy conditions with possible thundershowers tonight and Sunday. Temperatures cooler in the southern portion Sunday with less warmth overall in that area.
Three Soviet pilots led by Sigismund Levanevsky embarked from Moscow for a 5900 mile Arctic traverse to San Francisco. The mission over the North Pole aimed to cross Barents and Arctic seas, via Franz Josef Land and Spitzbergen, then down Canada to Vancouver and into the United States.
A sudden thunder storm in Cleveland flooded streets and halted traffic for over an hour. One unidentified fisherman drowned when his boat capsized in high winds and waves, causing thousands of dollars in property damage.
A meeting of all Democratic precinct committeemen and booth workers is called for Monday afternoon by the Elyria Democratic central committee. The rural resettlement administration announced loans to two new farmer groups previously ineligible, aiming to curb relief rolls. Eligibility now includes farmers denied loans by the farm credit administration and those facing eviction due to federal land bank payments. The program targets keeping about 250,000 families off relief in six months and reduces administrative burden while supporting self sufficiency through loans for food clothing equipment or livestock.
County Commissioner Oscar G. Dunn and John B. Davidson pressed for state division to honor county board recommendations in appointing old age pension staff. Additional boys include Warren Leimbach, Fred Wilcox, and Billy Shirker with knot tying, stool building, and show-call preparation. The junior style review drew praise for its quality and enthusiasm.
Sam Reynolds of Nebraska a candidate for national commander will speak at the Fifth District Ohio American Legion convention opening today at the American Legion hall on Ohio Street with 56 posts registered. The meeting adjourns 3 p.m. with committee appointments, followed by a banquet at 6:30 p.m. and an evening dance.
Elyria Mayor proclaims August 4 1935 as Crippled Children Sunday during ceremonies dedicating a warm water orthopedic pool at Gates Hospital and hosting a Social Security Conference. Notables include Miss Katharine Lenroot Dr Martha Eliot and Paul H King. CITY officials urge broad citizen participation and welcoming activities for visitors.
A large invited gathering from across the country will attend the open air dedication of Gates Hospital’s new orthopedic pool in Elyria. The event honors crippled children work led by Edgar F Allen with officials and leaders from over thirty states. If weather shifts, services move to Elyria High School auditorium.
Henry Hess of Cleveland retired after 33 years and eight months on the Big Four and New York Central railroads. Reared at Grafton, he started as a switchman, became a brakeman and then a conductor on the Southwestern Limited from Cleveland to Indianapolis. He holds a perfect accident record and is brother to Mrs. Susan Swiers of Elyria.
