Mecca Stampede Ties Iranian Pilgrims to Crises
Iranians faced a crackdown in Mecca after a civil unrest event amid the Hajj season. Reports say about 165 to 300 Iranians died or were missing as security forces dispersed a Friday pilgrimage demonstration. Embassies in Tehran and in Mecca were attacked or stormed, including the French, Saudi, Kuwaiti, and Iraqi missions, as police fought protesters and sirens filled city streets.
