City trims staff in 72 layoff sweep across departments
The ax fell Friday afternoon, with 48 regulars and 24 CETA workers cut as the city moves to close a 363000 deficit. Firefighters and patrolmen lost positions, plus five layoffs in building, streets, and forestry and four in engineering and parks. Mayor Keys cited adherence to laws and unions while awaiting further savings. The workforce shrank from 493 to under 450 as seniority and bumping reshaped the roster.

Italy Bologna station bombing leaves dozens dead
A powerful blast at Bologna central railway station wrecked waiting rooms and a restaurant, killing at least 55 and injuring about 180. Police sought a terrorist bombing as the cause while hospitals pleaded for doctors. The international express from Ancona to Basel was halted by the explosion.

Twin storms bring outages to Lorain and Cuyahoga counties
Two thunderstorms drenched Lorain and Cuyahoga counties with heavy rain and brief high winds. Power outages hit Amherst and Sheffield Lake while North Ridgeville forecaster Ray Diederick noted gusts of 25 to 30 mph with more rain expected and flooding possible in North Ridgeville. Police reported short outages in Oberlin and Elyria telephone service was interrupted. Authorities queued repair crews for sewer water and electrical problems as Birmingham area also flooded and more than two inches of rain were reported.

Driver dies in Pike County crash on Ohio Turnpike
The Ohio Highway Patrol Berea reports a fatal crash on the Ohio Turnpike four miles west of exit 11. A westbound car lost control, crossed into the passing lane and median, flipping onto its roof. The victim, unidentified, died after being taken to Southwest General Hospital in Middleburg Heights.
