Algae blooms challenge Toledo water andGreat Lakes risk
Algae contamination shut down Toledo’s water supply for two days affecting over 400,000 people. Last year’s bloom stayed in open waters and did not trigger a do not drink order. Patches appear in Sandusky Bay while peaks occur mid August to September. Toxins detected near Toledo and southeastern Michigan remain below swimmer warning levels. Climate change cited by some researchers as a factor. Blocks link blooms to other factors beyond a single cause.
