Small Georgia town racks up vast military gear for police use
In Morven Georgia police and other rural departments have taken millions in surplus Defense Department property since 1990. The program faces little oversight and supplies items from boats to decontamination gear. Morven Chief Lynwood Yates says he plans a dive team and SWAT unit with donated gear while acknowledging limited local crime and debating usefulness.

Hagel warns of deep defense cuts and carrier mothballs
Defense Secretary Hagel warned Congress that automatic budget cuts could force mothballing up to three Navy aircraft carriers and shrink the Army and Marine Corps, risking an ill prepared force against advanced enemies. Navy Adm. Winnefeld said choices must be shaped by final budget totals, with carrier groups dropping to eight or nine and troops thinning to wartime lows.

Senate confirms Obama ATF pick amid dramatic vote
The Senate approved B Todd Jones to head the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives after a lengthy roll call. A last-minute switch by Sen Lisa Murkowski and a flight back by Sen Heidi Heitkamp helped end Republican obstruction. Jones, a former Marine acting ATF director since 2011, strengthens the agency amid gun control debates and background-check efforts following the Newtown tragedy.
