Partly cloudy and not quite so cool with night frost in the east and rain in the extreme southwest tonight. Friday looks fair in the north portion and rain in the south, with warmer temperatures. General conditions expect an eastward pressure drift bringing rising temperatures and increasing cloudiness, with possible rain late tonight or Friday morning and a further warmup thereafter.
Helen Gilbert an 18 year old from Ridgeville disappeared Saturday morning after leaving with Mrs Lillian Rippan and a driver in a gray sedan. Authorities traced leads through Ohio and New York as relatives and police push for her safe return.
Cincinnati's Community Chests report record fund-raising with total of 2,399,691 oversubscribed by 9,000. Red Cross receives 100,000 and 250,000 goes to unemployment relief, marking largest chest in 17 years.
Stribling will train at Geauga Lake for his title bout with Stan Schmeling, with preliminary workouts starting in Macon and then Geauga Lake around May 20. Public sessions planned May 29, two to three nights weekly. Elyria had lobbied for the training site, but the final decision sent the challenger to Geauga Lake. May Schmeling may train at Cedar Point, though not final.
In Bagnell Missouri on April 30 a major blaze swept the town’s business district, leaving only the residence section intact. A garage, feed store, restaurant, drug store and general merchandise shop were burned, halted near the railroad tracks before reaching the telephone exchange and lumber yard. Two people died in a prior March 16 fire.
An explosion wrecked the Nichteroy Naval Chemical Laboratory in Rio de Janeiro. Twenty nine persons were killed and sixty wounded have been taken from the scene. Rescue and emergency operations followed the blast.
The East Ohio Gas Company formally refused the city councils 55 cent average rate proposal. City Law Director Harold H. Burton announced the refusal after Ralph W. Gallagher, company president, delivered it. Gallagher said the differences between city and company are well known and the proposed rate gives little heed to the companies position.
A lion escaped its leash during a natural history lecture at Whittier School in Cincinnati, injuring 7 year old Vivian Leichner critically. Police officer rescued the girl as trainers tackled the enraged animal and the trainer, while surgeon teams prepared for possible emergency operation.
13-year-old Bryan Uatlect, hero of the Lamar Colorado school bus disaster, stays at the White House with President Hoover. He tours Washington seen the medicine ball cabinet, meets the president, the Queen, and foreign dignitaries, recalling the night of the crash in candid terms.
Moscow reports 536 dead and about 4000 injured from a Frantiscaness earthquake. Red Army troops, militiamen, firemen, doctors and engineers aid in nine districts and 40 towns. Government commissions and the Russian Red Cross mobilize funds and shelter for victims, while flooding along the Dnepr disrupts communications and force relocations.
United States Senator Robert Bulkley of Cleveland will speak at the Antlers Hotel in Lorain on Wednesday May 6 at 730 PM. His topic is The Truth About Prohibition. Other speakers will be announced. Bulkley is on a tour addressing the hot issue.
Wellington resident Harold Wallace was fined 100 and costs after being arraigned on a driving while intoxicated charge before Justice S J George. Frank Joy, charged with intoxication, received a 60 fine plus costs. In Cincinnati, Viola Simpson, 33, was gravely injured after leaping 100 feet from the central bridge into the Ohio River last night. Two men in a rowboat rescued her. motive not determined.
Edwin Anderson Alderman, president of the University of Virginia, died late last night in Connellsville Pennsylvania while en route to Champaign Illinois to deliver an inaugural address. He was nearly 70, survived by his wife and one son Edwin Anderson Jr. He was the first UVA president serving 27 years and held degrees from Tulane UNC and many others. His funeral will be in Charlottesville Saturday.
Governor White announced passage of ten bills by the state legislature and vetoed two others. Signed measures include highway funds from gas tax, restoring solvency for public employees' Workmen's Compensation, and a canal and park program along the Miami and Erie Canal. Other bills address bank mergers, highway land acquisition, state banking supervision, and notice publication. Vetoed were a debt exemptions repeal and a fire protection bill.
FOW Davis Lorain was fined 100 dollars and costs by Judge Judiea S J George yesterday after arraignment on a liquor possession charge. Davis was arrested by state agents. April 10 Jobert Johnson, present at the arrest, was fined 25 dollars and costs for resisting an officer.
Eight passengers escape with minor injuries after a Cleveland-bound National Air Transport tri motor crash near Griswold road. Pilot Sam Taylor reportedly landed the craft with one functioning motor, saving lives. Taylor and mate Allen McDiarmid suffer serious injuries and possible internal trauma, while others, including boxers Gorilla Jones and Lynn Jordan, escape with minor cuts. The crash prompted investigations by National Air Transport and the U S Department of Commerce.
A hot-box sparked a fire on the Alexandria Express near Benha, killing 41 people including ten children. The blaze spread through a third class coach as passengers leaped from the moving train. Engine crew failed to detect the fire, allowing winds to drive flames to two more cars. 36 victims were hospitalized in Alexandria. One victim was a Spanish woman. others were natives.
Canton Ohio April 30 Isaac J. Fink founder of Lincoln University Oakland California and former Lafayette College faculty member Easton Pennsylvania was sentenced to two years eleven months to three years in the Ohio penitentiary for failure to support his wife and two children.
