France Restores Merchant Fleet After World War II Losses
After liberation France rebuilt its merchant marine from near ruin. In 1939 France had 670 ships totaling 2,733,635 tons. by 1948 total ships rose to 490 and 2,007,350 tons. Losses during the war exceeded 1.7 million tons. Recovery included 16 ships built at home, 37 abroad, and 135 second-hand purchases, with 87 ships bought from the United States and four seized as reparations from Germany. The reconstituted fleet enabled France to resume global shipping, with expansion driven by wartime demands and overseas construction.
