Two masked robbers armed with knives held up the West Erie Shell Service Station in Lorain last night and escaped with more than $135 in cash plus equipment valued at $100. Station attendant Cecil A Kessler, 58, said he was in a lubrication room when the entry occurred and watched through a two way mirror. He reported one robber flashed a knife and demanded cash, then both ordered him to a back room before fleeing with a radio and the cash register.

A US Navy P3A turboprop ditched off Toshima Island in southern Japan. All 12 crewmen aboard are presumed dead, with rescue teams unsuccessful in locating survivors. A 3 year old motorcyclist, Donald K. Tucker of Oberlin, died after his cycle hit a guard rail a signpost and a concrete bridge abutment near Rt 113 in Henrietta Township. Deputies said excessive speed caused the loss of control. The death marked the county’s seventh highway fatality of the year.
