Heavy trucks reshape highway costs and policy

Leslie Gould explains that about 10 percent of the nation's trucks are heavy class and roughly half of them 400000 are over the road. The rise in large trucks challenges highway construction and maintenance, raises congestion and safety concerns, and inflates state highway bills. California estimates heavy trucks add about 20 percent to its highway costs. Nebraska University data cited.

Highways Costs and Truck Tax Burdens Highlight 1950 Study

A 1950 King Features Syndicate piece analyzes highway costs for heavy trucks versus passenger cars. It cites $15,000 per mile for light surfaces, $46,000 for heavy trucks, and suggests truck users should bear 55 percent of new highway costs. It notes California trucks’ share of ten mile traffic at 45 percent but higher construction costs allocate 55 percent of costs to trucks. It also claims trucking taxes amount to about 30 percent of total motoring taxes while cars account for 69 percent, with 484 million diverted to nonhighway uses.
