California Supreme Court Extends Host Liability for Drunken Guests
The California Supreme Court ruled that social hosts may be sued when they serve alcohol to obviously intoxicated guests under circumstances creating a foreseeable risk of harm. The decision, tied to the Business and Professions Code, builds on a 1971 ruling holding outlets liable for over serving patrons who injure others. The case arose from James Coulter’s suit after attending a party where Janice Williams was served large amounts of alcohol.
