The Labor Department said an urban family of four costs 16,236 to live moderately and 23,752 for some luxuries, with austere budget at 10,000 more per year. Costs rose 4.7 to 6.6 percent year over year, varying by region.
Bauer Dairy, one of Lorain County's oldest, sold to Smith Dairy of Orrville. Walter Schmid, Smith president, says the firm will bring modern processing and packaging to the Elyria-Lorain area. The Elyria plant at 340 15th St employs 24, with 60 percent wholesale and 40 percent retail.

Charles A. Mills, 58, of 4425 East River Rd., died when his single seat home built plane fell to the ground near his residence. Coroner William Kishman ruled no natural cause and autopsy pending. The Red and White aircraft had about 800 hours of flight time over seven years. Flight originated from Lorain County Regional Airport around 2 p.m. FAA investigators examined the wreck, and Mills and co owner Thomas Gentilie reportedly checked the aircraft Sunday. An unidentified driver who had walked from a parked vehicle on the Ohio Turnpike was struck and killed by a westbound tractor-trailer at 10.28 a.m. The crash occurred about two miles west of Exit 8 Lorain Elyria Exchange, with the parked car on the right shoulder of the westbound lane.

Parents Glen and Mrs Lehman sued Amherst-M on April 13 in Cleveland federal court seeking reinstatement for James Lehman to Marion L. Steele High School football and $75,000 in damages. The out-of-court settlement dismisses the case and removes dismissal records from James’s academic file.
