Fortune still not smiling on women's pay gap
Washington says a Census Bureau study shows women’s earnings lag men’s despite gains in employment and education. Since 1950 female employment doubled while male employment rose 25 percent, yet 1974 median female income was 6 957 dollars or 57 percent of the 22 152 dollars earned by men. The disparity is linked to women’s concentration in lower paying clerical and service roles. The report notes 105 males born for every 100 females, though infant mortality is higher for male babies.
