Washington AP reports sociologists describe a trend of educated youths abandoning power and wealth seeking lower paid work or alternative lifestyles. Experts warn a future of large scale downward mobility may reshape society as top jobs fill by next generation and poverty grows among former middle class youths.
A Cook County grand jury resuming deliberations over the police slaying of two Black Panthers faced a growing contempt of court bill at $50 an hour for its special prosecutor Barnabas Sears. Judge Joseph A. Power clashed with Sears over court orders as the panel weighed the case.
A UPI report warns polio epidemics threaten city slums this summer unless vaccination drives are intensified. CDC official Dr John J Witte notes falling immunization rates since 1964, with only half of children in large city slums vaccinated in 1970. Separately, hearings on USPS rate hikes and a Power subpoena of Sears relate to the Chicago Panther raid inquiries.
Mrs Clyde Mauk who will observe her 70th wedding anniversary Thursday says living with a mate that long is easy when he's amiable nice and doesn't talk behind your back. She's 89 and her husband 91. They plan to just set in their big chairs and maybe have a drink with the neighbors.
Private First Class John Steven Gentowski of Elyria, son of Mr. and Mrs. Earl W. LeFrancois, has been missing in action since April 17 in Vietnam. A Tank Corps member and 1968 Elyria High School graduate, he enlisted May 4, 1970 after working at Luxaire Inc. for several years.
Lorain County gains two renal dialysis machines at Elyria Memorial Hospital to serve up to eight to ten patients weekly with twice weekly sessions. Dr. Harold McDonald heads the unit built through American Kidney Foundation efforts and local fundraising including Betty Crocker coupons. The program, funded by an anonymous donor and coupon drives, supports training for staff and ongoing care with a $12 000 annual local share from an $18 000 county budget.
A 24 year old New London man died after his car crossed left of center on a curve on Route 18 and struck a westbound tractor trailer. Neil A. Lewis of New London was pronounced dead at Norwalk Fisher-Titus Hospital. The driver of the truck was William H. Clevidence of Medina. Lewis had recently returned from Vietnam and his funeral arrangements are being handled by Eastman Funeral Home in New London.
North Ridgeville observer Raymond Diederich recorded 24 degrees, breaking a 20 year low. The prior 32 degree reading dated April 26, 1951. National Weather Service at Cleveland Hopkins noted 27 degrees, a 45 year record, aided by clear skies. Other Ohio cities hit new lows, while showers develop westward.
A Cleveland federal grand jury began investigating alleged water pollution by 12 northeastern firms, including Black River firms. Witnesses were subpoenaed and questioned by Chief Assistant U.S. Atty. Robert W. Jones and Atty. Edward S. Molnar. The probe concerns the Rivers and Harbors Act of 1899 impact on pollution in the Cuyahoga Chagrin Grand and Black rivers.
The EPA was reportedly asked to investigate as part of a federal grand jury inquiry. U.S. attorneys say it is the first federal grand jury probe of water pollution charges as a criminal offense under the 1899 act. Offenses carry fines from 500 to 2500 dollars or jail terms from 30 days to one year.

Moscow reports Soyuz 10 almost ended in a lake, with rescuers donning aqualungs as helicopters spotted the parachute in darkness. Soviet sources say the craft may not float and usually lands by parachute on solid ground. The crews landed safely after a light wind shifted the descent toward shore.
Workers at American Ship Building Co in Lorain end an unauthorized strike that idled 600 employees since last Thursday. Plumbers and Steamfitters Local 830 led the action, with no negotiations possible until workers returned to work. Zvosec cites firing grievances and management harassment as key issues, noting firings went unreviewed under the current contract.
Avon Lake officials charged Cleveland Electric Eliminating Co. with polluting the local air. A summons will be issued for CEI executives to appear in municipal court within a week as the city seeks enforcement after residents reported thick black smoke from CEI's A plant.
