An explosion at Aztec Chemical Inc plant 585 Garden St around 12:30 pm killed one man and injured two others who were taken to Elyria Memorial Hospital. Unconfirmed reports of additional casualties circulated as investigators awaited cause determination.
A chemical catalyst plant in Elyria suffered a major explosion damaging adjacent facilities. A worker, Kenneth Ditzel, 46, was hospitalized. others were unidentified. The Aztec complex includes nine buildings on a 12 acre site. Firefighters contained the blaze by 1:30. The plant, opened last year by Aztec Chemical Inc. founded five years ago by Dr. James B. Harrison and associates from Buffalo, is expanding production with goals to double then triple output in years ahead. Cincy report notes a separate OSU wave and call for a special session on criminal insurrection.
Vice President Hubert H. Humphrey announces his candidacy at a Washington luncheon as he seeks the Democratic nomination amid backing from business and labor. He faces Sen. Robert F. Kennedy and Sen. Eugene McCarthy, with Johnson reportedly backing Humphrey. His path hinges on Chicago’s August convention while Kennedy and McCarthy pursue primaries. Labor and business leaders fear Kennedy, aiding Humphrey’s bid as Chicago Mayor Daley and Gov. Hughes back him. Minnesota remains his base, with Alaska and Nevada delegations already pledged.

Elyria Mayor Leonard P. Reichlin announced he would recommend placing a 1 percent city income tax on the November ballot. He expects referendum petitions to be invalid due to signatures or circulation issues and says council should let the people vote. Two groups circulated petitions within 30 days of the tax’s passage. validity would delay collection until after the general election.
Bermuda Governor Lord Martenmere declared a state of emergency after a third night of rioting and arson on the tourist island. The executive council authorized mobilization of the island’s three man militia to quell the unrest.
Describing a riot that led to a curfew, the Bermuda government summoned a 300 man Bermuda regiment of part time soldiers and reserve police to enforce order. About 20,000 of the island's 48,000 residents are Bonwhite. Tourism floods in as US visitors flee to hotels while many downtown bars close and chaos includes hit and run raids. Riot damage to the Transport Control Board offices estimates at a quarter of a million dollars over two nights. Elections are planned for May amid unrest.
Intelligence sources report 10 000 truckloads of Red arms flowing into South Vietnam since March 30, surpassing December and January peaks. U S bombing raids target communist lines near Saigon as South Vietnam releases three Viet Cong prisoners to aid exchanges. American jets logged 96 missions into North Vietnam. an F4 Phantom was reported shot down with crew missing.
Two 18 year olds, Brian Newcomb and Terry Ott, were killed when Newcomb's eastbound car crossed the median on Kennedy Parkway near the Black River and tangled with two oncoming vehicles. Injured were Vicki Krausher and Mrs. Dwight Hood. both treated and released. Police estimate other cars traveled about 49 mph.
