Ohio GOP leaning toward Gilligan education plan says Kurfess
New Philadelphia Ohio GOP figures indicate the General Assembly favors Gov Gilligan’s education proposals over welfare and higher education. Speaker Charles Kurfess, Bowling Green, told UPI Editors Association the legislature is closer to administration aims in education. He supports the $91 billion budget and tax proposals but cautions maximizing value from tax dollars. McDonald, Gilligan aide and former House minority leader, notes concerns over spending pace. The panel also included Vance Trimble and Thomas Pew discussing investigative reporting and day-to-day newspaper work.

ACLU challenges Ohio plan to bar Girls State group
The ACLU warned the Ohio General Assembly that a measure barring the American Legion Auxiliary from the statehouse could be unconstitutional. It urged lawmakers to consider a general rule denying facilities to private groups that discriminate, rather than singling out the Legion. The dispute centers on handicap access for blind student Holly Reed and the Auxiliary’s rule against disabled girls attending Girls State.
