Sulf Treatment Emerges as Remedy for Erysipelas
Erysipelas is an acute skin inflammation caused by a streptococcus organism with fever and systemic symptoms. Before antiseptics the disease ran epidemic in hospitals and camps, more common in winter and spring, especially March and April, affecting ages 35 to 55 most, though infancy and old age fatal. Infection spreads by direct contact through tiny unseen wounds or fissures and can transfer via fingers.
Facial Erysipelas: Quarantine Urged In Surgical Wards
The text warns that erysipelas, especially facial cases, requires strict quarantine in surgical wards. It describes rapid spread across the nose cheeks and eyes, painful red borders, blisters, and a glassy skin texture. Fever, headache, and prostration accompany an attack lasting seven to nine days with possible recurrences.
Treatments and remedies for infectious disease progress
The passage lists many treatments including fremble based skin coatings to prevent spread, antiseptic dressings like ichthyol ointment, boric acid or Epsom salts for pain relief, iron tonics to boost resistance, serums and vaccines, ultraviolet and X ray therapies, and sulfanilamide which reduced mortality from about 15 percent to 2 percent. It notes costs and accessibility issues and occasional adverse reactions.
