Founding of Lorain County Seat and Early Courts
A historical overview recounts Lorain County’s 1822 formation, selection of Elyria as county seat in February 1823, and the initial courthouse and jail. It covers early commissioners, road planning, first court sessions in 1824, establishment of the Court of Common Pleas, first grand jury, and the recurrence of presiding judges through the 19th century, including the 1842 constitution transition and later office creations. The narrative names key figures such as Heman Ely, Edward West, Josiah Harris, and early officials who shaped county governance.
