Stand On Proposals In Union Security Debate
NUMBER , Continued . From Page One Stand On Proposals We believe that the company's proposals on union security, which still stand, are entirely fair and would continue the security the union has enjoyed. As you know, the company has offered either of the following (1) revocable check-off, or (2) maintenance of membership, with or without an escape clause. We feel certain that if the president strike ended and production resumed, we will be able to come to a far settlement on the wage. Carr said that the quotation from that April 15 letter, however, was incomplete and misleading as stated. He said that his April 15 letter said: "The Union security issue is a number one issue in any contract. It is an issue that both management and the union must weigh on the basis of promoting harmony, promoting security, and ability to keep the plant running." The union proposal to accomplish the above means has been union shop, and check-off provisions. He said Kimball's letter seems to suggest that union security is the only issue, except wages, but added that this is not the case as there are other issues to be negotiated. Union officials said that a complete report on the strike situation to date and on future plans would be given to Local 971 members at a meeting to be held at the Gates School Sunday afternoon.
