United Press tally shows 64 senators favor NRA extension, 28 opposed, and eight absent or unsure. Debate will center on labor rules anti monopoly provisions and how far NRA should regulate industry as the administration seeks to avoid a revolt amending the program.
Republic Steel Corp announces a cooperative group insurance plan shared costs for life, health, and accident benefits. Offered to all employees and subsidiaries not yet in a group plan, it provides coverage without medical exam and includes life, weekly sickness, and accident benefits based on earnings, underwritten by Metropolitan Life Insurance Co. of New York.
The weather bulletin notes cloudy skies with showers in the extreme west tonight or Thursday and in the eastern and central portions on Thursday. Tonight will be slightly warmer in the western area while Thursday brings a slight chill to the extreme west with overall cooler conditions.
Grand jury reported 11 cass sessions yielding five indictments. Howard Butler and William Wickens presented the cases. six were ignored. Of 32 witnesses examined, two indictments are secret pending arrest. Open indictments name William Barbarcs of Elyria for assault and battery and Elmer Davis of Lorain for burglary and larceny. Others faced no indictments. Indicted to be arraigned before Judge Guy R. Findley Friday. criminal trials start next week. panel to reconvene May 21.
Col Charles A Lindbergh likely will be in active command of the first Pan American clipper flight as regular air service between California and China is inaugurated. Officials praised the four motor ship after its Alameda Honolulu round trip, with service hoped to start late summer. Lindbergh, Pan American technical advisor, helped plan routes and ships for transoceanic flights and may lead the maiden passenger mail flight to the Orient. Captain Edwin Musick and his crew prepared for the next expedition toward the Midway Islands as the chain of transit stations between California and China expands.
Twenty two members of the Elyria Rotary Club were nominated yesterday for directors of the club for the coming year. Nine directors will be elected at the club's next meeting next Tuesday night. Washington April 24 First new machinery set up by President Roosevelt to distribute the 4 880 000 000 work relief fund started in a downtown bank building Frank C Walker New York attorney began organizing the division of applications and information a task he called one of the most difficult Ive ever attempted The agency will act as a clearing house on the 20 000 000 000 worth of construction now expected to be filed by almost every state county and municipality seeking a share of the huge appropriation The plans tentatively approved by DAL and WAB will be carried out by construction and relief agencies already set up the public works administration federal emergency relief administration and the US bureau of public roads The White House said an announcement of DAL was the first of a series revealing the whole work relief plan Appointment of the WAB personnel was expected soon The division had pending at organization a list of recommendations submitted by PWA FERA and the bureau of roads for employing needy persons on relief The president already has ordered expenditure of between 100 000 000 and 290 000 000 for grade crossing limitation PWA Administrator Harold L Ickes has surveyed the country for construction developments Relief Administrator Harry J Hopkins has plans for shifting 2 500 000 family heads to work projects Taking of a nationwide unemployment census is expected to start soon under White House direction Some 100 000 white collar workers will be taken off relief rolls to visit every family in the country list the jobless and assemble the data The re employment drive should reach its peak by mid November The administrations goal is to wipe out relief rolls by putting 3 500 000 persons to work on government financed projects and make jobs for 3 509 000 more in private industry by the spending program.
In Cleveland Ohio on April 24 two 13 year old Theodore Kulakowski and 14 year old John Jaslowski were shot to death while riding in a stolen car whose driver did not stop for police. A youth with him and the driver escaped uninjured. Police squad including Sergeant Clarence Watkins Patrolman Lawrence Dyer and Patrolman James Pannver were absolved of blame. Five shots were fired.
Deputy sheriffs hunted for Mike Szempety a 17 year old from Henrietta after he drove off in his father's car with $14 in cash and 20 chickens. The boy vanished while his father, John Szempety, negotiated to sell the poultry in Oberlin. The elder Szempety walked home about 15 miles and reported the disappearance. the boy lives with his father, younger sister, and a 191 year old grandmother.
Dismissal of several state highway department workers at the Oberlin division Monday night is under discussion with 14 employees said to have been discharged or to be discharged. Superintendent James H. Morris cites lack of funds as the cause and denies political motivation. He doubted 14 were actually discharged and indicated more cuts may follow. A former employee hinted at a month-old audit of election books by Ashland men to probe voting in the primary.
Sixty seven Minnesota farm families beaten by drought will move to Alaska to settle on 40 acre tracts in the Matanuska Valley as part of a federal project. About 200 midwestern families sail from Seattle around May 1. Each family must live on the tract at least five years to gain ownership with a $3000 drawing account.
William Bell of American Cyanamid Co. told the American Chemical Society that Roosevelt and Congress delay industrial recovery. He claimed recovery is within 90 days with a tactics change and cited 55 billion dollars in durable goods demand plus consumer demand to reemploy about 9 million workers.
Philadelphia April 24 William Wallace Atterbury announced his retirement today as president of the Pennsylvania Railroad Atterbury 69 has led the system since October 1 1925 Martin W Clement vice president who had acted as president since Atterbury fell ill was elected to the presidency of the road
Consolidation of five gas concerns under the Ohio Fuel Gas Company was before the State Public Utilities Commission in Columbus. The five firms named are the Ohio Fuel Gas Co Springfield Gas Co Edgewater Gas and Light Co Federal Gas and Fuel Co and a fourth company listed in the filing. Hearing is set for April 29 with ownership under Columbia Gas Electric Utility Holding Company.
London reports Britain sent Germany a brief formal acknowledgment of the rejection of a League of Nations Council vote. Other council members are expected to follow with similar curt notices. It is understood the remaining 13 governments will also reply without argument on German disarmament or the league’s denunciation.

Two youthful bandits armed with shotguns held up the Woodville State Bank, escaping with about $1,000. They acted quickly, ransacking cash drawers in under five minutes, then fled west on U S Route 20 in a dark Ford coach. The bank had been robbed previously on December 14 of more than $10,000 by three men.

The wreckage sank with the two crew members observed briefly before submerging.

A cattleman suit against Lorain settled for 1500 after Leona Griffin fell injuring herself at Erie and Washington avenues on May 2, 193S. A trial began yesterday, with Griffith obtaining a 3 75 cent judgment in the same action but later sent back for review by the Court of Appeals. Another Griffith suit for his wife's expenses was settled for 700. City Solicitor Wesley Grilis reported.
