Stanadyne awards six scholarships to local students
An independent Lorain County educators committee picked six Stanadyne Western Division scholarship winners. Four students receive 1500 each for bachelor degree studies while two get 300 each for study at Lorain County Community College. Named winners include Patricia Chretien Barbara Meyers Susan Ockajik Donna Palmer Tracy Smith and Timothy Stantion with plans to attend several colleges for business journalism physical therapy and health and physical education.

Carmen ruled competent for new trial in Columbus case
Former Elyria man Jack Carmen, accused of rape slaying a 14 year old Columbus girl, was found mentally competent to stand trial. The ruling delays the May 17 trial as Judge Shoemaker decides if he can face cross examination and potential death penalty exposure.

Williams murder charge reduced in Elyria Municipal Court
Wille L. Williams 48 of 415 Elm St pleaded innocent after a judge cut his aggravated murder charge to murder due to lack of evidence of prior calculation. Williams was ordered held to the grand jury with bond set at 10 000 cash and 40 000 personal. He fired a .32 revolver during a Saturday fight that left his stepson James Howard 30 dead three hours later. Williams must remain in Lorain County.

Raymond C Dyke of Medina won a fifth term as president of United Steelworkers Local 3224 in Elyria. The lightly attended election, the only contest, saw Dyke defeat Bruce Damon by about three to one. Also elected were Edward Blues vice president Kenneth Gunter recording secretary Robert Lanaghan financial secretary treasurer James Stalla grievance committee Edward Norris Otto Fore Blues Gunter and Lanaghan.

Trustees reject Bean mansion plan at Lorain County College
Lorain County Community College trustees touring the Bean mansion Monday said the building is old and unrealistic for college use. Historical Society asked to repurpose for fine arts to avoid demolition, but the late Frances Bean Vair directed razing in her will. Probate Judge Ewing allowed the building to stand if a non commercial user is found, though board members called it outdated and needing costly renovations.
