Liberated Allied troops recount at least three death marches conducted by Communist captors with over 500 deaths. One returnee alleges Russian troops urged North Korean guards to kill captives. Other accounts say up to 100 Allied Nationals were allowed to depart or be accounted for.
Three exchange prisoners testified to death marches in Korea with hundreds killed or missing. Pvt. William G. Moreland said 700 prisoners marched 300 miles toward Pyongyang in 1951 leaving 289 alive at the end. Sgt. Orville Mullins recalled a 50 mile march where Russian interference and combat conditions led to multiple deaths. Other accounts include malnutrition and executions, with witnesses naming various camps, guards, and Allied captives.
Elyria expects summer completion of four off street parking lots to serve 665 cars. J R Zeager and Herbert Meister seek options on properties including two Third street sites and two Second street sites with a Depot and Cedar street location. Parking revenues and curb meters will fund bonds. no tax money is used. City officials listed include Kenneth Lord John McDonough and John Hovis with Norris Ryder Earl Bell D M Overcash L R Ashenbach Otto B Schoepfle as committee members.
The second day of the Panmunjom prisoner swap freed 35 Americans and 70 Allied soldiers, bringing total Allied returnees to 200 including 65 Americans. The group also included 12 Britons, 3 Turks and 5 South Koreans, with 11 litter cases.
Rescue crews dug through twisted Champion Atlantic Coast Line cars after a derailment near midnight. Five people were killed and about 150 injured, many servicemen, with 26 hospitalized and 60 sent to nearby hospitals. Fires and wreckage blocked tracks as the train plowed into a field and 14 cars telescoped. City police reported five bodies recovered, with possible additional victims in the debris.

In Dillon South Carolina near hear a streamliner of the Atlantic Coast Line derailed Monday night injuring two Ohio women from Cleveland Mrs Frieda Bernheimer and Mrs Flora Bernheimer.

More than 4200 was collected in an hour as workers braved bad weather for the Elyria Cancer Crusade. An additional 121.86 came from three theatres. Dr. Ware, local campaign chairman, says the hour beat last year’s total by 700 and industrial divisions have yet to report. County chairman Schowalter praises public dedication.
Police report Clara Tackett aged 15 missing from 358 Ninth Street since 8 am yesterday. She left a note saying she planned to marry. She was last seen wearing a navy blue dress a navy and white checked coat red belt shoes and a purse.
At a recent meeting the Elyria City Board of Education instructed its clerk to draft a letter to East and West Carlisle and Elyria Township officials about potentially stopping tuition pupil enrollment. The board cited reaching construction and funding limits and warned other districts may need to arrange alternatives for tuition students within the next year.
Elyria City School District board met in special session with architects Oulcalt Guenther and Associates to review plans for a proposed Rosealee School in the northwest area. They discussed surfacing options and set bids for site work at Gates Edison Garford Roosevelt and Hamilton schools with contracts to be awarded May 26 after bid opening.

Safety Service Director Dan W. Kothe reported at a City Council meeting that Elyria will soon fluoridate its water. A council resolution by the Elyria Community Welfare Council was presented, with bids on April 22 for fluoride feeders and drawings submitted to the State Board of Health for approval.
The House Industry and Labor Committee advanced a Burton Fair Employment Practices bill in a 7 to 0 recommendation for passage in Columbus. The report notes the committee action as part of state labor and civil rights legislation.
A spokesman for Ohio Fuel Gas Co asked the Public Utilities Commission to extend the freeze on new gas and space heating installations in 361 communities served. Chief engineer W T Shinholser testified there is no near term gas supply improvement and peak winter demand could exceed supply by about 65.9 million cu ft daily, threatening to curtail industrial deliveries to meet residential needs.
The Canton school board approved a 3100 annual raise for teachers to take effect September 4. The plan raises salaries for eligible staff and aims to adjust compensation to recruit and retain educators.
The aunt and uncle of Pvt. Charles Sacco in Lorain express joy at his release in Monday night’s prisoner exchange. Sacco, 27, was captured after arriving in Korea February 1951 and inducted in Christmas 1951. He worked at National Tube Works before his capture. his family in Guelph Ontario received some letters from him.
