Central Ohio nurserymen report record cold over the weekend harming roses and possibly wrecking the peach crop. Snow totals reach 4.2 inches in Columbus and 2 to 3 inches in Cincinnati with a record low of 21 in Columbus. Growers warn full extent will take days to determine.

The Ohio Turnpike Commission filed an appeal with the Ohio Supreme Court challenging the Second District Court of Appeals ruling that the commission must accept alternate bids on asphalt and concrete. It argues the decision misleads the court, cites legislative history, and notes delays push roadwork and a 326 million tollway start into mid or late year.
Five traffic incidents were blamed on January weather in Lorain County over the weekend with three injuries. Edward McDaniel Jr a U S Air Force member from Youngstown was hurt in a collision at Routes 303 and 57 when ice prevented him from stopping. Dewey Mann Jr of Elyria said he did not see the stop sign while turning onto Route 303. McDaniel was treated and released. A second weather linked crash damaged a semi trailer owned by Riss & Co Inc of Kansas City and involved David Bollinger of Oberlin. both vehicles faced heavy snowfall on Route 2. Final unofficial returns in Japan's second general election in six months show Shigeru Yoshida's Liberal Party failing to secure a firm single party majority. The result leaves coalition questions unresolved as Tokyo awaits official tallies.
Thirty American prisoners freed in the first exchange of the Korean War will fly to Tokyo for processing before returning to the United States. Another thirty five Americans are slated for release in a second day of exchanges. The mission proceeded with light fighting along the front, and_FREE village checks indicated readiness for interviews Wednesday.
The United Nations lists 30 Americans freed in the first prisoner exchange at Panmunjom. Names include MSgt John P. Porter of Le Compte Louisiana and Bordentown New Jersey. Pfc Robert Stell of Baltimore Maryland. Cpl Vernon Warren of St. Louis Missouri. and others from Puerto Rico to California. Addresses cover cities across the United States and Puerto Rico, reflecting wide geographic distribution.
A Elyria woman suffering a heart condition received oxygen and resuscitation at home from Fire Department personnel Captain Henry F. Stolzenberg and Fireman Roiland L. Higeons. Two doses of medicine were given before an ambulance took her to hospital where her condition was reported fair after a good night.
The Explorer Scouts rally scheduled for tonight at the First Congregational Church has been cancelled due to lack of interest. H V McDermott, explorer advisor to the Southeast District commissioners staff, announced the cancellation following a recent commissioners meeting.
Elyria officers pursue a car from Lodi street on Route 20 to Kipton, clocking Dominick Venturella at 75 mph. He and two companions Shirley Ann Thompson and Mildred Casey face disorderly conduct charges. Venturella fined for reckless driving and resisting arrest, Thompson fined, Casey ordered to appear.
United Auto Workers at the Ford forging plant in Canton Wuh-Cio walked out today over safety conditions and pay adjustments, idling 1,490 production workers.
Archbishop Edward F. Hoban of Cleveland will attend a low pontifical mass at St Marys Elyria on May 3 to inaugurate a week of events marking the Golden Jubilee of Elyria Council No 774 Knights of Columbus. Richard Teasdale leads the anniversary committee with William Ready as secretary treasurer and many auxiliary groups assisting.
Cancer drives urge residents to turn on porch lights at eight tonight to signal a donation. Volunteers will call for gifts supporting the American Cancer Society with funds aiding local and national efforts. A council meeting is scheduled for 7 30 p m in the city with attendance noted.
Returnees describe Communist attempts to indoctrinate 30 Americans released by the Reds at Panmunjom. Cpl James Pinkston says captors delivered lectures on Stalin’s death and alleged Allied blame for the Korea war. Some POWs were too ill to move. others endured deaths in captivity as they were freed at Panmunjom and taken to Freedom Village then Seoul hospital.

Despite cold weather more than 40 people joined the first of six Cleveland Museum of Natural History bird walks. Four groups reported 35 species near Elywoods Park starting at 7 15 from the Washington Avenue entrance. A repeat walk is planned next Sunday at 7 15 from the same start.
Holy Cross School invites parents and friends to an open house from 7 to 8 p m tomorrow. Sister Dee says classes will run a 20 minute session for guests to view ongoing work, followed by folk dancing demonstrations in the gym and a meeting with pastor Rev C Cadnik and the teachers.
