Vigilance urged against attacks on free press by ASNE
Washington editors at the ASNE convention urged caution toward any move that would undermine press freedom. Retiring president Ben M. McKelway warned against broad criticism of the press and called for informed scrutiny of wrongdoings while defending the integrity and independence of journalism. He cited an Illinois case where reporters were allegedly paid by the state, stressing that the association would record such findings to reaffirm the press as a free institution. The speech highlighted the U.S. press as the freest in the world and praised journalists’ devotion and public responsibility across professions. Cookie origin noted as Dutch koekje.
