8000 Idle In Strike At Steel Plant
PITTSBURGH A wildcat strike closed the Homestead works of Carnegie Illinois Steel to day idling 8000 workers. More than 200 pickets massed at the gates to turn back day shifts as they reported this morning. The CIO United Steelworker said the stoppage was unauthorized. The walkout started among maintenance workers over an old dispute and the company by doubling up had shortened their work week to four days while the mill operated a full week. The plant, a subsidiary of U S Steel Corp, has an annual capacity of 3 973 000 ingottons and manufactures heavy structural steel plates piling and slabs. The holiday was voted by USW Local 1397. They sent trucks to the gates bearing public address systems to appeal to other workers to stay put. Thousands jammed into the streets surrounding the plant but none crossed the picket line. Workers said the strike had been brewing since June. Union officers disclaimed responsibility, saying the steelworkers had a contract and were trying to live up to it. A company spokesman said the USW filed grievance yesterday on behalf of open hearth and maintenance workers demanding immediate processing. Management refused stating the grievance should be handled through regular channels. The company said the union demanded five days pay for a four day week because the rest of the works was operating five days.
