A 14 year old Albuquerque youth, Carl Gustafson, was found alive high on a Sandia mountain trail after a snowstorm but died before rescue teams could bring him down. He was hiking with 16 year old Robert Carter when the storm struck La Luz trail to Sandia Crest. Gustafson exhausted, temperatures near 20 degrees, six inches of snow fell. a tramway operator and others retrieved him but could not save him.

Two miners freed as third remains missing at Gary mine
In Gary West Virginia two of three coal miners trapped after a rock fall in U S Steel No 2 drift mine were brought to safety on a motorized aid car. George Easley and W Owen were identified by state officials as the freed workers while Kyle Lynch remained trapped. The No 2 mine is the largest of nine operated by the steel firm.
