NASA urged to tighten inspections after shuttle disaster
Space center Houston AP report says Columbia accident investigators pressed NASA to broaden inspections of shuttle wings leading edge panels and to start in orbit photographs to assess damage. The board warned current checks are inadequate and a foam strike may have caused the breach that doomed seven astronauts. NASA aims to act on all recommendations and hopes to fly again this calendar year.

Salmonella declines in meat and poultry products
Washington AP reports that overall Salmonella prevalence in meat and poultry fell over two years due to increased testing and USDA safety plans begun in 1998. Of 58,085 samples last year, 43 percent were positive, down from 58 percent two years earlier. Chicken ground products rose to 29.1 percent positive from 19.5 percent. Brower chickens show a slight drop. Richard Lobb notes most ground chicken is cooked before sale.
