Fire destroys only industry in Berlin Heights

Berlin Heights fire raged yesterday destroying Berlin Fruit Box Co the village's sole industry. Officials estimate damage between 100 000 and 150 000 with much machinery salvageable. Fire chief Harold Ike Bellamy noted twenty five years of fear as winds and building design complicated efforts. no injuries reported.

Elyria Woman, 80, Robbed of Antiques

An 80 year old Elyria woman, Laura Carver, antique dealer of 149 Harvard Ave, was robbed last night when four men forced entry. She was tied, gagged, and bound as they searched for antiques, with one item valued at 1000 dollars and 58 dollars stolen. A caller identified as Nelson, claiming Toledo residence, had previously contacted her about Burmese glass. Police report the incident led to an overnight search for the suspects.

Tax vote petitions to be filed today in Elyria

Petitions totaling 2160 signatures calling for a 1 percent income tax vote were to be filed today at 1 15 pm with the city council clerk. If valid, the petitions halt tax collection until after a November vote. Deadline is tomorrow at midnight. Dunn Petro Sanford trio leads a 54 sign petition effort, needing 1273 signatures. The petitions stay with the clerk for ten days for blie inspection.

Robbers Take $7,000 From Central Security Bank

Four or five men robbed the Colorado Avenue Central Security branch at 10 55 a m forcing two tellers and the manager to lie face down. They escaped on foot then likely fled in a white or beige Ford. The heist follows a January robbery at the same bank, where about $10,000 was stolen. One suspect was spotted nearby before the incident. Authorities are continuing the investigation.

UCS seeks business help for Elyria summer job center

The United Community Services of Greater Elyria launches the Elyria Neighborhood Center Summer Job Opportunities program to provide 16 to 21 year olds with summer employment. Aimed at Negro and underprivileged white youths, the effort targets 45 to 50 openings, with orientation by June 1 and work starting after June 6.
