Lorain Schools Move to Eliminate Up to 167 Jobs

Lorain City Schools sent bargaining unit notices listing up to 167 positions to be eliminated district wide including teachers and staff. Some losses may come via retirement incentives and attrition tied to a $9.3 million projected deficit and Southview High School closure.

Kennedy opens new Club in Wakeman replacing Lorain venture

businessman Brad Dicken reports Mike Kennedy will open Kennedy's Players Club today at 5 p.m. in Wakeman after deciding not to reopen his private club on West Fourth Street in Lorain. Co owner Stan Moon cites ongoing legal fights over gambling and zoning as the reason for leaving Lorain and moving operations to 10 E Main St. in Wakeman. The Lorain Law Director ordered the Lorain club closed last month, citing gambling and zoning concerns despite changing the occupancy permit from poker hall to private club.

Elyria eyes Blue Ribbon panel for long term safety funding

Councilwoman Mary Siwierka proposes a Blue Ribbon committee of community members to work with Police and Fire heads. The aim is to devise long term funding to replace a $3.7 million federal grant that pays 23 firefighters for two years, preventing layoffs when the grant ends. The panel reports to the Safety Committee and counsels the council and administration.

Coroner Identifies Woman Found With Severed Foot

Lorain County coroner Paul Matus said the woman whose severed foot was found March 29 has been identified but the name will be released at a news conference. DNA matched to a 56 year old woman last seen March 26 walking from her Lorain home. The foot was discovered by four teens near an abandoned railroad trestle south of Routes 57 and 254.

Nurse convicted of assault remains on EMH staff

Elyria nurse Kathleen Filiaggi, 38, convicted of misdemeanor assault at a western Cuyahoga County hospital, is on EMH Regional Medical Center staff but not treating patients while appealing. EMH spokeswoman Kristen Davis said she has not worked with patients since the situation emerged in late March. Filiaggi joined EMH in 2003 and had been a part time instructor at Lorain County Community College, where she is no longer employed due to her EMH status.

Toyota halts sales of the Lexus GX 460 after Consumer Reports issued a Dont Buy warning citing handling and rollover risks. Toyota asks dealers to stop selling the SUV while it conducts its own tests and reviews the vehicle.
