The Sanitary District Tunnel blaze near Calago claims sixteen lives with eleven others dying earlier. Nine firefighters and seven tunnel workers survived the night of horror as efforts to rescue continued. authorities report a bulkhead trapped smoke and hindered escape while divers and rescue teams operated to reach trapped workers.
The district court of appeals will hear the cases of former Police Officers Birkline and Kray this Thursday. The main issue is whether discharge of a patrolman can be done by the city service director or must originate with the chief of police. Judge Vaughn backed the officers. the city appeals, potentially reaching the Ohio Supreme Court.
Ohio remains generally fair tonight and Wednesday with warmer conditions in the northeast. A cable despatch reports ten United States Marines killed in Nicaragua near Puerto Cabezas amid fighting between rebels and guardsmen under Lieutenant Tatrah. Corporal Morales of the Guardia was wounded in two clashes. A Marine plane dropped food to a besieged detachment as about 125 rebels engaged the guardsmen. An unconfirmed note claimed 509 bandits killed 25 people at Bragmans Bluff.
Crestline April 14 Two deputy sheriffs with no guns failed to stop Rupert Juher 32 alias Roy Brown from escaping as he and the officers left a train for lunch. Juher, captured at Vermilion, had been held on forgery robbery and bigamy charges and was being transported to New York via Columbus when he bolted. An intensive search and alerts were issued to Crestline Bucyrus police.
Sheriff Clarence Adams announced that Arthur Wallace and Waurice Rice will be taken to the penitentiary tomorrow if arrangements can be made. Wallace is to serve a life term for the slaying of Norman Watte in Lorain on January 28. Rice was sentenced to seven years for his implication in the crime.
At Langley Field on April 14 two Army fliers fought to dislodge bombs caught in the plane’s wires. Captain Hofert Breene and Major Charles A Frenuch jumped with parachutes just as the craft blew apart, surviving after dramatic midair maneuvers and parts showering the air.
President Hoover and Secretary Stimson urged renewed Pan American cooperation during a Washington gathering marking the Pan American celebration. They praised the unity formed by a union of nations, emphasizing commercial ties and mutual aid as central to peace and progress in the Western Hemisphere.
Leopold of Shenbenville was elected president of the Chi sovety For Crippled Children at the convention in session here. A M Tillivelast of Toledo was named first vice president and Tarry T. Madrid reports King Alfonso XIII abdicates in favor of a Republican government after a day of upheaval. Premier Aznar confirms the resignation as Republicans press for complete renunciation of power and order a peaceful transfer of authority to the provisional government in Madrid.
Edgar F Allen of Elyria Ohio was reelected president of the International Society for Crippled Children. Other officers chosen included Paul Kinney as first co president Thomas F Blair of Ottawa Canada as vice president Q Chandler of Wichita Kansas as third vice president and FE J Howenstine of Elyria as secretary and treasurer.
In Medina County on April 14 a jealous husband stabbed Clayton McAfee and set fire to his wife Alice McGreggor 45 and stepson Harold Ridley 20 after dousing them with kerosene. The farmer Jim McGreggor 47 then hanged himself on the farm. Alice and Harold were hospitalized in Cleveland in critical condition.
