As of April 5, 850000 Ohio residents north of Columbus had not filed federal tax returns. Only about 1.65 million returns were received, well behind last year’s pace. Desert Storm extensions may apply for military personnel, and 41,000 returns were filed electronically. IRS will answer calls Saturday and Sunday to assist filers.
A 15-year-old Elyria boy was shot once in the neck after a fight in the 300 block of West Avenue Friday night. Police arrested a 16-year-old suspect an hour and a half later. The victim, Terry Bowens, remained in serious condition at Elyria Memorial Hospital with no planned operation. Lorain County faces widespread layoffs as 16 of 50 county workers are cut to trim about $100000 from the 1991 budget. The move follows Sheriff cuts of 67 of 156 employees and auditor actions, all part of a budget shortfall and $2 million in claims to be paid. Deputy and maternity leave positions are affected, with notices ongoing.
