Last-minute tax filing pushes Ohioans toward midnight deadline

As of April 5, 850000 Ohio residents north of Columbus had not filed federal tax returns. Only about 1.65 million returns were received, well behind last year’s pace. Desert Storm extensions may apply for military personnel, and 41,000 returns were filed electronically. IRS will answer calls Saturday and Sunday to assist filers.

Elyria teen shot as feud erupts in street

A 15-year-old Elyria boy was shot once in the neck after a fight in the 300 block of West Avenue Friday night. Police arrested a 16-year-old suspect an hour and a half later. The victim, Terry Bowens, remained in serious condition at Elyria Memorial Hospital with no planned operation. Family members described a long-standing feud dating to grade school, with rumors of rival groups gathering for a brawl near Ely Square after a basketball game.

Judd Wheatley Wins Regional Spelling Bee Title

Judd Wheatley, Midview Middle School eighth grade, rose from 16th to first in the South District Bee, outspelling 30 competitors to earn an all expense paid trip to the 64th Scripps Howard National Spelling Bee in Washington DC May 29 30. He celebrated with a No 1 gesture amid nerves on stage at Northwood Junior High School.

More workers cut in budget sweep

Lorain County faces widespread layoffs as 16 of 50 county workers are cut to trim about $100000 from the 1991 budget. The move follows Sheriff cuts of 67 of 156 employees and auditor actions, all part of a budget shortfall and $2 million in claims to be paid. Deputy and maternity leave positions are affected, with notices ongoing.
