Mahony seeks quick tax fix. commissioners resist

Record turnout for Elyria police civil service test

Police test draws 272 applicants, a city record for minorities and women with 75 minority seekers among 355 signups. Civil Service Commission secretary Richard Elsasser and Urban League director Ron Rucker praised the turnout as a strong first effort. Test held at Elyria High School with 200 general knowledge questions, graded by Case Western Reserve University. results expected in about a month.

St Mary Students Welcome Home Gulf Pen Pal

Sgt Tim Schuster spent six months overseas in Saudi Arabia while living with the St Mary School fifth graders in Elyria. The 33 pupils in Sister Mary Kay White’s class wrote to him through football and basketball seasons, swimming and snow days. The pen pal link began when his mother Fran attended a game with the teacher and asked for correspondence.

Railroad worker killed at USS Kobe plant in Lorain

Roger Chandler, 49, a 21 year veteran of USS Kobe Steel in Lorain, died after being struck by a railroad car near a primary rolling mill. He was found at 10:45 p.m. and died at St. Joseph Hospital at 11:12 p.m. The accident marks the second fatal incident at the plant within a month.

Cozy Spa sale nets $215000 at sheriff auction

Elyria reports three buildings owned by Keith Long, a woman convicted of running a house of prostitution at a Spa in Shef field Township, sold for 215000 in a sheriff’s department auction. Proceeds, after 110000 in liens and costs, will be shared by the sheriff and county prosecutor. Earlier, 148000 in bank accounts forfeited by Keith was split. Prosecutor Greg White said funds may fund matched federal grants and drug purchases.
