B52s Hit Viet Cong Hideouts in Mekong Delta Fire Zone
Eight engine B52 bombers conducted rare missions in the densely populated Mekong Delta to strike Viet Cong hideouts ravaged by weeklong forest fires. Initial strikes targeted a base near Vinh Binh, with 20 Communists killed, followed by deeper attacks at the edge of the U Minh forest. An Air Force C147 crashed at Khe Sanh, killing one civilian aboard and injuring five. The Viet Cong announced a three day truce in four delta provinces, but Saigon and Washington ignored it.
