Rapid growth in Ohio's northern industrial belt creates urban suburban strains. Panmunjom in Korea moves toward the first of more than 600 sick and wounded prisoners of war crossing toward home. A four day 200 mile transport through bombed roads leads from Chonman toward the freedom gate at Panmunjom with medical checks and possible helicopter evacuations. UN and Communist officers reach a non signed understanding on exchange and Clark weighs resuming armistice talks.
Senator Oakley Collins announced a bill to clarify conflicting election provisions and standardize filing times for tax levies bonds zoning and other measures. The proposal developed with county election officials and backed by Secretary of State Ted W Brown would amend 35 sections to create uniform filing dates, reducing invalid petitions and ballot printing delays. Clifford McGhee 29 of South Amherst stopped on Route 58 at North Ridge road intersection and after starting up again struck Arnold H. Winter 41 of Lorain who was traveling west. Both cars damaged. McGhee arrested by State Highway Patrol for failing to yield right of way and for no operator's license.
Weather outlook for Northeastern Ohio shows mostly cloudy skies and cool temperatures with a high near 44 this afternoon. Tonight remains similar with a low around the same. Tuesday brings partly cloudy skies and warmer afternoon temperatures. Sunday ranges 38 to 45 with 0.12 inches of precipitation in the last 24 hours ending 8 pm. Humidity readings Sunday morning 32 percent, evening 92 percent. Sunrise at 5:48 am and sunset at 7:08 pm on Monday. moonrise 5:16 am and moonset around 7:13 pm.
Ralph E. Kirby named industrial chairman of the Elyria Cancer Fund Crusade by city chairwoman Mrs. Earl E. Ware. Kirby, a Perry-Fay Company treasurer and former Ernst and Ernst CPA, lives at 331 Stanford Ave with his wife and three daughters. Harold A. Zealley becomes chairman of the professional persons and hospital workers committee. English-born, he arrived in 1935 and is a hospital administrator at Elyria Memorial Hospital and a member of multiple medical and civic groups.
The Elyria Street Department closed West Avenue between Third and Fourth streets to southbound traffic for two or three days for sewer work at the Y. M. C. A. activities building. Two new Stop signs were installed recently, according to Fred McNally of the department.
Catherine Wilhelmy a 23 year old passenger in a car driven by Robert Kowalleski suffered shock at Elyria Memorial Hospital after a collision at the Middle avenue and Fourth street intersection. Linden of LaGrange drove another car into Kowal leski’s vehicle with questions of right of way. A separate three car crash on Fifteenth street involved Frank Beckman and David Mulloy with Mulloy’s car hitting a parked car owned by Louis Green of Cleveland.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday for James Maloney a former Lake County sheriff who retired in 1948 and was the nation’s oldest sheriff at that time He died Sunday at age 87 in Painesville Ohio.
The Lorain County Education Association will hold its spring banquet at Grafton High School on Wednesday at 6 30 p.m. Dr Ralph W McDonald president of Bowling Green University is the featured speaker. Officers and delegates will be elected and nominees include E F Litzenberg Fred Daniel Mrs Susan Davidson Mrs Ruth Barber Miss Virginia Richmond Mrs Wiletta Robson Orlando Shilts Katherine Plas and others. The executive committee also endorses E K Lower for the National Education Association.
Elyria High School musicians returned with three superior ratings and three excellent ratings from the state final solo and ensemble contest at Kent State University. Firsts were earned by Ted Berg Jr. on clarinet Solo, Dave Rostkowski on piano, and the brass sextet Brenner Felty Moore Wurster Sandow Stang.
Rep Fulton R Pa introduces a discharge petition to compel a floor vote on a 10 percent income tax reduction measure stalled by GOP leadership. If signed by a majority, the petition would force action on the legislation in the House.
More than 500 Lions from 36 Ohio towns attended the Lorain convention closing banquet where S A Dodge of Lions International urged peace through friendship. Elyria’s R L Larkin and wife won a waltz prize while Elyria’s quartet captured another prize advancing to Columbus. Dodge highlighted Lions Detroit activities including annual plans to send 1000 blind children to summer camp and noted the group as the world’s largest service organization with 10 147 members.
President Eisenhower departed Washington aboard the Columbine at 10 44 am est for a week of golfing in Augusta Georgia. The trip marks his first real vacation since taking on the presidency as heavy rains dampened the departure.
Mayor Henry W. Ault travels to New York City to sign bonds totaling 1,650,000 for storm sewer extensions. The bonds were delivered to Seasongood and Company, Cincinnati, and the city plans short term reinvestment until construction funds are needed.
Three cars were involved in a crash about a mile south of the New York Central tracks near Middle Ridge road on Highway 58 at 10 45 P M. The drivers were Donald G Linden 20 of R D 2 Hamilton Street Oberlin Thomas P Abbott 35 of 636 Franklin Avenue Amherst and Frazier Ed.
Columbus UK Gov Frank J Laushe today accepts the resignation of Frank A Hunter as assistant director of the Department of Liquor Centre effective Wednesday. Hunter resigns to enter private law practice.
