Economy Bloc Whittles Relief Funds and Seeks WPA Reform
The economy bloc in Congress trimmed relief funds for this year and aims to block further relief appropriations until the Works Progress Administration is reorganized. The Senate sent Roosevelt a 100 million dollar relief bill, 50 million short of his request, with further asks for 1.5 billion for the next fiscal year. Pepper's attempt to raise to 150 million failed 49 to 28. Schwellenbach's plan to freeze WPA also failed.
