Area drag racing season opens with track upgrades and new circuit
The opener at Dragway 42 faced cold conditions but featured strong turnout as equipment mostly worked and racing resumed after a long layoff. Amherst driver Ron Wood switched to Street Eliminator, winning on a best 11.22 second run at 122.78 mph. Plans include track repainting, bleacher repairs, and surface restoration. The Ohio Circuit of Dragways launches across four tracks with a yearlong points chase, top finishers earning circuit bragging rights. Notable moves include Armond Holley shifting to modified coupes and Port-Midwest roadster debuting as the No. 54. Formula 5000 adds Buckeye Cup with a $980,000 purse and features Redman, Oliver, Andretti, and the Unsers. Additional FIA events at Mid-Ohio include Camel GT and Goodrich Twin 200s, plus SCCA SuperNationals in July. Top Fuel honors went to Dale Funk at 5.99 seconds and 266.22 mph in Warner Robins, with results also including Shirley Greer and Wally Booth.

Auto Racing Slump Hits USAC Through 1975 Start
Nationally auto racing falters with the economy as USAC coffers shrink. Only California 500 drew a full field. Trenton 200 and Phoenix events attracted dwindling crowds. Sponsorship losses press teams to risk fewer cars, with Firestone pulling back and top outfits down to select races. The sport eyes a temporary bump at Indianapolis before a renewed slide in June.
