Slain man in $28 hold up at Lawson Milk store

Lorain police report an off duty patrolman shot and killed 20 year old Wilfredo Morales during a holdup at Lawson Milk Co. Morales, armed with a .22 revolver, fled the store at 1603 Kansas Ave after two men entered wearing masks. One robber escaped. A companion sought.

Boy 2 Drowns In Washing Machine In Parma Heights

A two year old, Brian J. Edwards, climbed onto a top loading washing machine in his basement and toppled in as it ran. His mother, Gary Edwards, reported him missing around 10 a.m. and police found the body in the washer at 10:30 a.m. A wooden hobby horse lay nearby as investigators theorize the child toppled into the machine after climbing the horse.

Brooke says Nixon pledges no 1972 war burden

Sen Edward W Brooke said President Nixon told him Republican candidates will not face the 1972 campaign burden over Vietnam. Brooke spoke during a Boston church protest by fasting worshippers. He urged leadership to withdraw American troops and war materials from Vietnam by December 31 1971, linking a troop pullout to eventual POW releases.

Sit-in at Stanford Medical Center Ends in 22 Arrests

Twenty two demonstrators and a Palo Alto City Council candidate were arrested after a 30 hour sit in at Stanford Medical Center protesting the firing of a black employee. Ten protesters required hospital treatment for minor wounds, one officer was injured, damage estimated at $100000. Police used a battering ram as demonstrators barricaded a second floor hallway and hurled objects.

Man pleads innocent to murder

Elias Davila 28 of Lorain pleaded innocent today to second degree murder in the killing of 18 year old Jose Reyes near the Happy Boys Pool Room. Bail set at 25000, preliminary hearing set for April 20 after Davila turned himself in with a recently fired .25 caliber revolver.

End of 131 day Gulf oil fire Killer well seals final kill

131 day offshore blaze ends as Shell completes the killer well to cap 11 wild wells in 55 feet of water off Louisiana. The explosion on Shell's control platform Dec 1 killed four and caused about 36 million dollars in damage while maintaining production losses and pollution fears. The Margaret finished its killer well, using mud and seawater to stop the flow and prevent further sea pollution.
