Massachusetts based Red Thunder Cloud, who died at 76, was hailed as the last Cat awbba speaker though scholars dispute the claim. Linguists note decades of decline, the language’s end in 1954, and a project to build a Catawba dictionary from notes and artifacts scattered after his death January 8.
